Comparison of different techniques for the quantification of soil gas emissions


Agricultural soils are an important source of greenhouse gases, namely CO2, N2O, and CH4. In the light of climate change there is need for reliable quantification methods of gas emission rates from soils. Several measurement methods exist, but all of these methods have known biases and shortcomings, which makes obtaining reliable measurements challenging.
It was found that emission rates of CO2 and N2O were consistently higher when measured with the flow-through technique compared to closed chambers. Worldwide closed chambers are the most common method to quantify gas emission rates, and thus the implications for greenhouse gas assessments may be significant.
The aim of this master thesis is to investigate the underlying mechanisms of these findings.
