Ulaanbaatar, or formerly known as Ulan Bator, is the capital and largest city of Mongolia. With over 1.3 million inhabitants, almost half of the country's total population live in this city. This is where our excursion in 2018 began.
On 24. July we landed at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and settled in our first accommodation.
The first day of excursion started at the University and we got acquainted to the Mongolian students and teachers who went with us on excursion. We split up into groups of four students, two german students and two mongolian students. Within these groups we organised the meals for one day at our excursion and did the field work.
Some expressions of the city Ulaanbaatar.
At the end of our excursion we came back to Ulaanbaatar for two more days. During that time we visited the museum of the Winterpalace of Bogd Khan, had some free time to buy souvenirs and had our goodbye dinner with the Mongolian students and teachers. At the very last evening the Mongolian students had a surprise for us and showed us Ulaanbaatar at night and Ulaanbaatar from above.
All in all it was some very exciting 14 days in the land of the steppes, mountains, and deserts. We were fascinated by the diversity and beauty of the country, but also realized the challenges with the management of its natural resources.
