Institute of Soil Science

Soil is the basis of life for all of us.

We work every day to better understand this prerequisite of our lives. We do this to protect this valuable resource in times of climate change and overexploitation, in order to use its services for society in a sustainable way.

At our institute, we cover the entire spectrum of soil processes on the micro scale to sustainable soil management on the ecosystem level in research and teaching.

ABOUT

Soil science deals with the processes in the uppermost, living part of the earth's crust. It describes the interactions of soil with the neighbouring compartments lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. The great importance of the biosphere, including humans, on soil processes is thereby increasingly being recognised. As a systems science, soil science at the Leibniz University Hannover bridges the gap between the classical geosciences and the environmental and agricultural sciences. Using modern methods and approaches from the core scientific disciplines, basic and application-oriented topics are researched and recommendations for sustainable soil management are developed.
